responce to scene in chapters 7-12
the scene with the mule: chapter 6 and compairing chapter 2
how the mule represents janie-
the mule represents many things in this book. one of the things the mule represents is janie. the mule represents janie because what it did in its past life and now the life style the mule has. the mule was over worked by Matt Bonner, until Joe bought him. when Joe bought the mule he saved him and led him to a life of leasure. this is what joe also did with janie. she was over worked by his old husband and when joe married her she was able to live a life of leasure. the way the mule came to joe was also the same way janie came to him. the mule ran away from Matt, just like how Jannie ran away with Joe.
how the mule shows the differnce in how Joe and Logan think-
there was a mule in one of the previous chapters aswell. logan who was janies first husband had bought a mule for her to work the farms with. Joe bought a mule for janie just to have and to love. this is compairing how joe and logan think of janie.

respone to scene
scene: when janie goes and talkes to nanny about not being happy in her marraige. it shows alot about nannay and janie. passage starting on page 23 to the end
respone: this passage tells you alot about janie and her maturity. she thinks love will just come to here event though she is unhappy in her mairage. she thinks that married people are just naturaly happy or will learn to love each other with time. it also shows that nanny is only trying look out for janie and here well being. janie is only 16 and has always lived with nanny and nanny knows she is going to die soon so she only wants the best for janie. she wants janie in good hands and with some one that she knows will take care of her. janie is complaining about all of his bad looks and phisical aspects and nanny is thinking about what he can provide her with. nanny gets a little at janie about this. this sets the tone for later on in the book when janie demonstrates some qualities that would make nanny happy.

"Their Eyes Were Watching God" 1st quotation responce
Quote: "Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men. Now, women forget all those things they don’t want to remember, and remember everything they don’t want to forget. The dream is the truth. Then they act and do things accordingly." (page 1).
Response: The first few lines are saying that every man has a dream in mind, or are working to achieve their dream. For some men their dreams come to them with not that much struggle like the tide but for others it is always in sight but they can never quite achieve/ get to it. The last few lines are talking about woman and how they are different from men. It is saying that woman basically have a selective memory and only remember the things they want to. The last two lines are talking again about dreams. It is saying if you act accordingly, correctly or strive to achieve your goal that it will happen. Every one has dream, its up to you to make them happen or come true.

197-214 quotation responce---huckfin
“All right then, I’ll go to hell!”
- this quote is talking about jim, when they take him and sell him. he says he will go to hell if befor he will stop being a friend to jim. this shows really stong charecotr on hucks part and how strong of a person he is and willing to do the right thing. if makeing a differnece to some one even if it endangers you it sill can be worth it. it shows the strong bond between huck and jim and really brings out hucks charector.

huck responce for 92-108
As you can see Huck and Jim are extreamly close. what does it mean that he is so close to him at these times? it is not social atiquite to be such good friends with a slave. this shows a level of maturity on Hucks part and that there is no difffence between races and children can see that if they have not been taught to. Huck is trying to free a run away slave who has taught him alot in his life. this show that you can learn form anyone the problem with people is that they are to quick to judge and somethimes the littleist kids can see that the best because they dont know how to judge yet.
floating 71-91 responce
there are many interesting things in these chapters that symbollolize different things to coem in the book. for example how Huch and Tom go on an adventure. Adventures are also a main theme of the book. During their adventure they are floating down the river. floting down the river can symbolize not having controle. this is what i infer from this because the other day...well most of this year i have felt like i was floating, not able to controle or stop anything, so it is slightly ironic that we are now reading about it. this is how i realate to this. During this chapter they also live off the land and really fend for them selves, which can symblize growing or being independent or self relient, also somethings we have been doing this term. In the end of this chapter they loose the raft, it floats away and they are unable to retrieve it. this could mean that they still are not as responisble as they think and have learning to do. it could also just be a new chalenge presented to them and depending on how they deal with it will determin how mature and self relient they are. it could also mean they can gain more controle or their lives becaus what they were floating on is no longer presnt. this could also mean the opposite thing which is that they have no controle but it depends on whre you are coming from.

Emily Dickinson, poems under heading “Day 1”
Emily Dickinson, poems under heading “Day 1”
~Would you label Dickinson as Transcendental? Why or why not?
- i think that Emily Dickenson is a transcendentalist. she is a transedentalist because she says that she has pain in a few of her poems but she pushes threw it. this shows that she is self relient and strong within. she also states that no one can have power over her which shows that she strong and self relient. these are all qualities that transedentalist posess.

Song to myself by Walt Whitman
Song to Myself by Walt Whitman: responce on 15, 51 and 52
"the past and present wilt"
- This is just saying how the past drifts aways and compairs it to wilting. the past melts/ wilts away as it get further into the past. The present will become the past and so the cycle is on going.
"i too am not a bit tamed, i too am unraslatable..."
- untamed is meaning that the person is a free soul, always is free, haveing fun and pursuing what they want. when the quote says untranslatable it means they cant be defined in a sertain way because they are always branching out and doing something new. they are unpredictable.

Hawthorne, “The Minister’s Black Veil”
Hawthorne, “The Minister’s Black Veil”
“why do you look back”
- why do you look back? Are you looking for some thing, someone, reminiscing, remembering better times, or harsh ones. You can never change the past but you can learn form it.
“if I hide my face for sorrow, there is cause enough…and if I cover it from secret sin, what mortal might not do the same?”
- what is the cause to hide your face? If you are upset you hide it from others but in this quote he says he is hiding his face form the pain/ the sorrow. Maybe he is hiding from the horror that is going on out side.

Nathaniel Hawthorne, “Young Goodman Brown”
“there may be a devilish Indian behind every tree.”
- to me this means that there may always be threats. You have to watch out you never know what will happen next time you turn a corner.
“be it so”
- what ever will be will be. You cant change what is going to happen or what did happen.

Henry David Thoreau “journals
Quote from: June 27th
- “For an impenetrable shield, stand inside yourself”
- The strongest shield is in side yourself. This means when you are felling vulnerable look inside your self to find the answer. It is not an actual shield agent’s physical force. If you are self reliant and confident you can look inside yourself and will always fell comfortable and confident.
Quote form December 2nd
- We do not all stand in front ranks of the battle every moment of our lives; where is a brave man there is the thickest of the fight, there the post of honor.
- This means that it doesn’t matter where you stand in battle, the front line or last you are still putting your life on the line and are brave. When a brave man is in battle it is the hardest and thickest of the fight. This is because a brave man won’t back down and will continue on event if his life is endangered. A man that is not brave may back down and wont fight till the end but a brave man will stick it out not looking at the outcome for his own life.

Due: 9/19 Quotation explanation of Henry David Thoreau
"Where I lived, and what I Lived For"- by Henry David Thoreau
~ "the morning is the most memrable seasion of the day, is the awakening hour"
- i really like this quote because its states something so obvious but in a suddle way that i have never realized before. it breaks the day up into parts and compairs it to the seasions. its says that morning is the most memorable time of the day, it is the awakenign hour, this reminds me of spring time becasue they are both crisp and starts something new. Henry is breaking the day down into a small year.
~ "all intelegents awake in the morning"
- This quote is quite self explanitory but if you look deeper you may see other hidden reasons. every thing wakes up in the morning and so all the minds start working again. the quote about also says alot about the mornings and how it invokes thaught and it is the most memorable time of the day. it think the mornings start the mind agian and also is a very thaught pervoking time of day which is what i think Henry Thoreau is trying to get across.

Explanations of quotations form Ralph Waldo Emerson from "Self-Reliance"
~"nor does he know until he has tried."
- in my oppion this quote is saying that you don't know waht you are capable of until you have tryed. Always try things and never be afriad to because you never know what will happen until you try and what it the worst that can happen, you can't do it? and what if you can?
~ "No law can be sacred to me but that of my nature. good and bad are but names very readily transferable to that or this; tey only right is what is after my constitution; the only wrong what is agenst it.
- im my oppion this quote is saying that it is better to always be true to your self and be your self event if it is good or bad. don't go agenst in what you belive in just to be main stream, it is beter to be self reliant and your self becaus atleast you are being true to yourself and your inner nature.
~ "Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.-- is it so bad then to be misunderstood?"
- if you are always misunderstood then you are always misunderstood and every one will know that is who you are good or bad. atleast it is who you are and you are being true to yourself, dont wory who you are just be yourself because it is always better to be yourself.
Explanations of quotations form Ralph Waldo Emerson from "Nature"
~ but every night come out these envoys of beauty, and light the univers whith their admonishing smile"
- every night the stars will come out and you can count on it, they will always be there and ever as beautiful. they are true to themselfs and people like that. it gives people something to religh on.
~"nature never becomes a toy to a wise spirit"
- a smart person will recognise how special and precious nature is and apreciate it for what it really is and will take care of it and not take it for granted.

What do you want to get out of American Lit this year?
When i was in middle school i never was a fan of writeing, but over the last few year i have really come to love it and now it is my favorite subject. I am not so great a grammer and spelling though so it is always a goal of mine to become stronger in those two aspects of my writeing. My strongest writing skills have to do with writing analytical pappers. I always look for new ways to expand my my vocabulary and was thrilled to see the vocab book we got in class today.
